Sumthin' bigger for the 1/32 scale enthusiast?
These are pics of the 1/24 scale Carrera-bodied BMW V12
which turned faster lap times than the Euro-Championship Plafits at Uncle Kal's
in California last Saturday night, in the hands of racing champions Chris
Radisich and Greg Gilbert. Other than the body and the Pro-Track sponge tires,
it was totally stock, no weight added. With another ounce or two on the nose,
the car should cut the times by another 1/2 second.
The car was assembled from the
T24004 kit parts,
and including body mounting with the Automatic Body Mounting Tool (part #T2407)
in about 15 minutes while showing the raceway manager how to do it.
In this configuration, the car has a 4.5" wheelbase, and runs great with a
single magnet on our Carrera track. One can use many injected or resin bodies.
For the purist, the steel pan could be trimmed about 1/16". For the expert, the
body can be mounted on the outside of the pan instead of on top. We encourage
the top mounting only because it makes it so easy for beginners, and beginners
are for whom this car was created in the first place.
Since the body is recessed where the pins should go up front, I used the
hypodermic tubing straight through the body with clear plastic washers cut from
the car's clamshell packaging to stop the tubing from sliding out.
The wing is re-attached using the stock body-mounting bolts, with two short
pieces of 3/16" aluminum tubing as spacers between the wing and body. A wide
washer retains the wing, which floats, so as to be crash protected. The total
weight is a rather hefty 5.6oz, the body being 2.5oz of this total... What a
brick! Note that the little bracket behind the chassis can be used to bolt
engine/gearbox/suspension detailing to the car for more Concours points. An
extra TSRF guide bolt/nut combo can be used for this purpose.
One would need his reading glasses to locate body-mounting pins... Note that the
stock wheel inserts from the Carrera chassis fit right into the TSRF wheels...
