RadTrax/Scalextric/TSR race report

On Friday afternoon, the RadTrax Convention attendees were treated to a 1/32 scale TSR race, with handout chassis and Scalextric Mercedes-Benz CLK bodies.

There were 12 entrants grouped in teams of two.
They had one hour to mount the bodies using pin tubing and straight pins, and could do anything they wanted to the chassis and motor as long as nothing was replaced or added.
They had the opportunity to practice on the Carrera track, and then lined up for the race.

During practice, old man Philippe and Rudy Garriga of "Slick 7" showed the youngsters how it's done by competing in establishing, then beating the track record, which ended with Philippe edging Rudy by a few thousands at 2.2124". Adding a second traction magnet brought the record to 1.9895".

The racing was incredibly fast, torrid and IROC close, but the very consistent team of Rudy Garriga and Jerry Whitney kicked Butt (that is, the team of Jim Butt/Keith Allen) by 7 laps, or less than 20 seconds at the end. Tony and Mike Jack battled all the way but crashed too much in attempting to catch up. Allan Schwartz was a bit overwhelmed by the speed but kept his legendary cool to finish a consistent 4th, helped by Gene Smithson, using a trigger controller for the first time! Len Jackson and Dana had too many offs to contest this spot but set the fastest lap time in the race, and Larry Shepard and Larry Geddes, two of the best "non-magnet" racers on this side of the pond, had trouble to keep the pace in the last spot.

None of the cars sustained any other damage than loosing their Mercedes-Benz emblem on their noses, and there were no mechanical failures of any kind. Everyone had a lot of fun, and Jon Pierracos was certainly impressed by the cars performance and reliability.

Final race results:

Placing Team Laps +/- Fastest time Lap average

1st: Rudy/Jerry 425 1/3 2.796 53.1
2nd: Jim/Keith 418 1/3 2.632 52.2
3rd: Tony/Mike 408 0/1 2.851 51
4th: Allan/Gene 385 1/0 3.070 48.1
5th: Len/Dana 376 4/1 2.312 * 47
6th: Larry S/Larry G 372 2/0 2.960 46.5

The team of Rudy and Jerry won a TSR24 RTR chassis, and a great time was had by all.
Regards,

Philippe
